Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy

Many couples experience times of conflict, disappointment, and frustration, in their relationship with their partner. When these challenges become more than the couple feels able to manage, it may be time to seek the support of a trained professional. Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy offers a respectful and collaborative short term process that many couples have found to be very effective in helping them develop useful tools to get through the tough times. This work proceeds from the assumption that all couples are doing the best they can to adapt and cope, but that partners may have become stuck in patterns that limit their ability to feel securely attached, accessible, and responsive to each other. The therapy involves helping each partner to identify and express their deepest needs and desires, and in the process expand the capacity to experience feelings of connection, security, and pleasure in the relationship. This therapy was developed in the 1980’s by Drs. Susan Johnson and Les Greenberg, and has been proven in clinical research to be very effective in relieving marital distress.

There came a time when the risk to remain tight in the bud was more painful that the risk it took to blossom.
